- Performed obesity (bariatric) surgery as early as 1983 (vertical banded gastroplasty)
- Received specific obesity surgery training at Iowa University with Dr. E. Mason
- Performed laparoscopic surgery as early as June 1991
- Developed and standardised the surgical technique for the laparoscopic application of gastric banding (LAP-BAND) with Dr. Guy-Bernard Cadiere in September 1993. The technique has been adopted worldwide by most surgeons using the LAP-BAND
- Experienced in laparoscopic gastric surgery (over 2,000 patients operated upon with excellent results) and laparoscopic functional surgery of the stomach (Nissen fundoplicatio)
- Regularly performs live procedures in front of audiences
- Teaches at the European University of Laparoscopic Surgery, Strasbourg, France (Pr. Marescaux) and Italian School of Laparoscopic Surgery
- Organised over 30 international workshops where more than 250 surgeons worldwide were given "hands-on" training on the laparoscopic application of LAP-BAND
- Has given over 150 lectures worldwide
- Published more than 200 medical articles in journals around the world
